[Class 83 (iii)] A fluid-pressure-operated chuck comprises a fixed annular cylinder 14 having an annular piston 16 connected to an internally-coned sleeve 22, the sleeve acting on a ring of balls 23 interposed between the bevelled ends of a sleeve 11, which is fixed in position, and the bevelled end of a sleeve 9 adjustably fixed to the rear of a controlrod 7, so that forward movement of the piston presses the balls inwardly against the bevelled surfaces and moves the control-rod rearwardly within the hollow driving shaft 1 to close the collet 8. The piston 16 acts on the sleeve 22 through a ball-bearing 20 and the sleeve 11 rotates on the control-rod and, at its forward end, bears on the end of the driving shaft 1. To open the chuck, compressed air admitted through a connection 30 moves the piston rearwardly until it uncovers outlet apertures 25 in the internal wall 17 of the cylinder; the aperture 29 of a duct 28 leading to an air connection 27 is covered by the piston so that the air trapped behind the piston cushions its final movement. To initiate the forward movement of the piston, another duct from the connection 27 leads through a non-return valve to the bottom of the cylinder 14.
