[Class 83 (iii)] In a chuck, the collet a is operated by an axially-slidable wedging sleeve b which is movable by an axially-slidable sleeve h through the medium of two sets of radially-movable balls f, g, or equivalent elements mounted in a fixed member d, the sleeves b, h, which are grooved at r, s, respectively, co-operating with the set of balls f for contracting the collet and with the set of balls g for releasing it. The sleeve h is movable axially by means of an angularly-movable cam ring m provided with a cam groove n in which are located guide-pieces o attached to a fixed part q. The ring m, instead of being angularly movable, may be moved axially by fluid-operated means.
