Abstract

638,185. Aerating liquids. NORDELL, C. H. Jan. 30, 1948, No. 2824. Convention date, Feb. 26, 1947. [Class 14(i)] A diffuser tube for aerating a liquid, Fig. 3, comprises a hollow fluted cylinder 5 having end caps 7, 8 and a hole or plurality of holes 20 in each flute and wrapped with one layer of non-circular cord 6 to provide narrow and substantially uniform air passageways for air pumped into the hollow cylinder. In an application of the device to aerating sewage, Fig. 12, a series of diffuser tubes are bolted together to form a long element 28 supported by vertical slides 45, 65 for removal from the tank 29. A flexible pipe 56 and conduit 53 supply air to the element 28; and it is adapted to be withdrawn from the tank by means of cords 71 attached to an endless belt 42 driven by a motor-winch 40. A number of the tubes may be welded together to form a unit, and the cord 6 may be a monofilament plastic cord extruded with helical circumferential grooves, or a twisted multi-strand cord may be used.
