Abstract

637,938. Converting. ERICSSON TELEPHONES, Ltd., and HOPWOOD, F. W. Jan. 26, 1948, No. 2253. [Class 38 (ii)] In order to reduce sparking between contacts VB1, VB2 of an electromagnetic interrupter used for converting D.C. to A.C., a seriesresonant circuit comprising a capacitor C, and inductances LC and LS having linear and non- linear characteristics respectively is in series with the A.C. portion either directly or through a transformer. The inductance LS can be made by winding a coil on a core of suitable grain orientated nickel-iron alloy having rectangular saturation characteristics. The form of the resultant current wave is such that the make-and-break current at the interrupter contacts VB1, VB2 is effectively limited. In a modification, the series-resonant circuit is connected to the secondary of an auxiliary transformer, the primary of which is in series with the primary of the first transformer. In another modification, the series-resonant circuit, the primary of an auxiliary transformer, and the secondary of the first transformer are in series, while the load R is across the secondary of the auxiliary transformer. In a further modification, the series-resonant circuit is connected to the secondary of an auxiliary transformer, the primary of which, the secondary of the first transformer and the load resistor R are in series.
