637,566. Aircraft wings. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and RUSSELL, A. E. Jan. 14, 1948, No. 1187. [Class 4] An aeroplane wing has a part of the conventional rib structure replaced by ribs extending between the upper and/or lower surface of the wing and a monocoque structure such as an engine nacelle, the space thus formed being utilized for the accommodation of a single large fuel tank, freight, accessories or the like. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the ribs 7 which would normally lie in that part of the wing 5 enclosed by the engine nacelle 9 are dispensed with to provide an uninterrupted space between the wing spars for a fuel tank 15, the wing portion within the nacelle being reinforced by chordwise extending beams 12, 13 attached to the stressed-skins of the nacelle and the upper and lower wing surfaces 10 and 11 respectively. The nacelle may be mounted only on the upper or lower wing surface in which case that portion of the wing surface not covered by the nacelle may be strengthened locally, for example, by increasing the skin thickness.
