637,398. Melting and refining metals and alloys. LEPP, H. Aug. 12, 1947, No. 22445. Convention date, March 27. [Classes 72 and 82(i)] [Also in Group XXII] A process for the purification, fusion and casting of metals and alloys comprises melting the metal or alloy in a closed receptacle in an atmosphere of gas containing carbon dioxide and substantially free from oxygen, hydrogen, water, hydrocarbons, sulphides and hydrosulphides, the said gas being continuously passed over or through the molten metal or alloy at superatmospheric pressure and casting the molten metal or alloy in the same atmosphere so that the metal or ally is in contact only with the said gas throughout the melting and casting thereof. The gas used may consist of carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The apparatus shown comprises a melting crucible 1 having a pouring spout 9 and cover 2 through which passes a refractory tube 4 which is adapted to be moved vertically into or out of the crucible thus permitting gas to be blown over molten metal in the crucible or bubbled through it as desired. A collapsable cowling, made of sections 11-16 and hinged at the tipping axis of the crucible, provides a gas tight cover over the pouring spout 9 and a casting mould 10. A vent 17 in the section 11 permits the displacement of air from the apparatus by the carbon dioxide containing gas. Specification 445,268 is referred to.
