Abstract

637,202. Stays for hinged articles. EVANS, W. Sept. 4, 1947, No. 24379. [Class 65 (i)] A stay comprises a friction member 13 connected by a linkage 14, 15 to a hinged member or lid 16 and having a plane surface which slidingly engages a vertical plane surface on a fixed guide member 12 under resilient pressure, and means for varying the pressure automatically according to the angular position of the hinge. A lever arm 20, pivoted at its lower end 21, is urged against a projection 19 on the friction member by a leaf spring 22. The lid is held in the closed position by the engagement of said projection with a recess 27 in the lever arm. In a modification spring blades bear upon a cam surface formed on the friction member. The cam surface is so shaped that the blades are deflected away from said member when the lid is lowered, while one of the blades rides over a hump to hold the lid in the closed position.
