Abstract
636,792. Blasting-fuzes. HOWDEN, J. R. (Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I.). May 3, 1948, No. 12149. [Class 9 (i)] An electric blasting-fuze is closed by a bridge plug formed by assembling two semi-cylindrical pieces 1, 2 of resilient material around legwires 5, 6 and securing the pieces together by an annulet 4 of ductile material. Each plug piece has complementary grooves 3 to accommodate the leg-wires. A bridge-wire 7 is fixed to the leg-wires and the assembled plug is inserted into a charged shell. The grooves 3 may be omitted and the surface of the legwires may be knurled or the wires may be distorted to increase the grip of the plug on the wires. The plug may be of rubber or synthetic rubber such as polymerized butadiene compositions, neoprene or polymerized chloroprene compositions, or polybutylene compositions. The annulet may be of steel, copper or aluminium and the plug pieces may be of other shapes which fitted together give a plug of circular cross-section. The plug is inserted in a shell containing a detonating charge such as tetryl with a superposed primary charge of mercury fulminate. A water-proof coating of rubber cement or wax may be applied to the plug.
