Abstract

Radioactive metal products from which radioactive emanations are not evolved are made by uniformly mixing a finely divided metal and finely divided radioactive substance which emits a particles, pressing and sintering the mixture to a compact, applying a sealing layer of a metal substantially free from radioactive material to a surface of said compact, bending a metal backing member to the opposite surface of the compact, and rolling the composite until the thickness of the sealing layer is such that it can be penetrated by a particles having the maximum energy with which they are emitted by the radioactive substance. Organic films, such as various plastics, may form the sealing film, but non-metallic inorganic films such as fused silver chloride or a metallic film as of a noble metal, are preferred. Silver is preferred as the backing member, but copper, nickel or stainless steel can be used. Gold metal powder and a finely divided radium salt in an amount between 1 to 12 per cent by weight of the mixture are preferred. Specification 629,415 is referred to.
