Abstract

636,284. Air-speed indicators. PEST CONTROL, Ltd., and TUDOR, P. W. Dec. 11, 1947, No. 32719. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] An airspeed indicator for use in aircraft comprises a propeller exposed to the relative wind and a motor driving the propeller independently of the relative wind, the indicator being responsive to the reaction of the relative wind on the driven propeller. As shown in Fig. 1, the propeller 3 is driven by a constant speed motor 1 which is mounted on trunnions 2 so as to be free to rotate about the axis of the driving shaft in response to the reaction of the relative wind on the driven propeller against the restoring force of a spring 5 connected to a torque arm 4 integral with the motor casing. The air-speed may be indicated mechanically by the rotation of the motor about its shaft or, as shown, means (see Group XXXVIII) responsive to the current supplied to drive the motor may be provided. The indicator may be used to control mechanism for spraying crops (see Group XXXVIII). In another embodiment, the indicator propeller is driven by a constant torque motor so that variations in speed of rotation of the propeller due to the reaction on the propeller of the relative wind serve as a measure of the relative wind. The speed of rotation may be measured by a chronometric device of the kind described in Specification 615,487, [Group XXXVIII].
