Abstract

635,776. Valves. DISTILLATION PRODUCTS, Inc. March 26, 1947, No. 8171. Convention date, July 19, 1946. [Class 135] A solenoid - operated valve in which electromagnetic attraction is used to close a valve member 1 has a coil spring 9 of small amplitude sufficiently powerful to initiate the opening movement of the valve member against atmospheric pressure admitted through a connection 2, the other connection being subjected to a vacuum, and a comparatively weak coil spring 11 of large amplitude to complete the opening of the valve member after the pressures on either side thereof have been equalized. The spring 9 is disposed between a sleeve 8, slidable on a valve stem 7, and the valve member, a flange at the upper end of the sleeve bearing against the lower end of a solenoid plunger or armature 6 when the valve is open but, on closure of the valve, being arrested by the housing before the valve is fully closed, to compress the spring. The armature 6 is of hexagonal or other polygonal shape to decrease the possibility of sticking. A soft rubber &c. gasket 10 is carried by the valve member in a groove of such section as to permit lateral expansion of the gasket when it is compressed between the valve member and its seat.
