635,696. Firelighters. ALDOUS, A. E. Dec. 12, 1946, No. 36777. [Class 50] A firelighter in the form of a compressed brick is made of a mixture comprising a hydrocarbon oil such as sump oil or gas oil, coal tar or Stockholm tar, sawdust or asbestos or a mixture of the two, and one or more of the substances naphthalene, paraffin wax, turpentine rosin or bitumen. In an example, 1 to 2 parts by volume of sump oil with 0.5 to 2 parts of coal tar are mixed with 8 to 9 parts of sawdust, which may be heated or dried to increase its absorbent qualities, and the whole allowed to stand until the oil is completely absorbed. A total of 6 parts of one or more of the substances naphthalene, paraffin wax, turpentine rosin or bitumen, maintained in a fluid state, for example by application of heat, are then mixed in, and the mixture pressed into moulds and allowed to set.
