Abstract
629,664. Fuel. ELKAN, F. Nov. 21, 1946, No. 34551. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1945. [Class 50] The combustion qualities of low grade coals are improved by the admixture of from 5 to 15 per cent of a material comprising up to 50 per cent of oils of ignition point 350-650‹ F., mixed with up to 50 per cent of hydrocarbon oils, or paraffin or other waxes, or stearin, of ignition point 150-300‹ F., the total oil content being 20-90 per cent of the composition, together with 10-40 per cent of a fibrous absorbent substance and a binder. In a preferred form the material has 20-75 per cent of a carbonaceous base, such as anthracite culm or bituminous coal dust, with which is mixed up to 25 per cent of each type of oil, up to 25 per cent of the fibrous material and a binder. In this composition the total oil content lies between 10 and 80 per cent. The higher ignition point oils may be heavy lubricating oil or mineral oil or a high viscosity organic, vegetable, animal or tar oil. The other type of oil may be crude oil, fuel oil, paraffin or other wax or stearin. The fibrous material may be sawdust or peat moss and the binder, pitch and starch, pitch alone, or resin with or without slaked or unslaked lime. In one of a number of examples of the composition, 27¢ per cent of bituminous coal dust is mixed with 27¢ per cent of anthracite culm and dehydrated at 350‹ F. 16 per cent of heavy mineral oil and 2¢ per cent of crude oil is heated to 250‹ F., sawdust being added and the whole poured onto and mixed with the hot coal. To 19 per cent of pitch heated to 300‹ F. is added 2¢ per cent of starch and this binder is incorporated in the mass which is then briquetted or poured onto a cooling sheet. The material in lump or granular form is mixed with the coal being treated in proportions depending on the nature of said coal, the amount usually being from 5-15 per cent of the weight of the coal. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the feature that sulphur and iron powder may be added to the composition. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
