Abstract

A cold-setting composition for use in the manufacture of slabs, plates, and blocks or as covering for floors, ceilings, decks, walls and partitions and prepared by mixing an aqueous emulsion of a synthetic resin of the ethenoid type with a powdered inorganic material that will set in contact with the water of the emulsion, reinforcing materials, fire-retarders, and fillers, has plaster of Paris, preferably of the slow-setting variety, added in order to control shrinkage. The resin may be polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, or polyvinyl acetal, and the setting-material may be Portland, Roman, Sorel or Titan cement or cement fondu; asbestos may be employed as a reinforcing-agent, magnesium or zinc carbonate as a fire-retarder, sand or crushed slag as a reinforcing-agent, and red iron oxide as a pigment.
