Abstract

1,212,195. Lightweight cement. J. F. WILTSHIRE. 23 Feb., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 8771/67. Heading C1H. Lightweight concrete is made by moulding and hardening a composition comprising Portland cement or cement made by fusing lime with alumina, water, and a particulate thermoplastic material and then extracting the thermoplastic from the hardened composition. Suitable thermoplastic materials are glass and polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride which can be used as the expanded materials. The thermoplastic material is extracted in whole or in part by melting, e.g. with steam in an autoclave, or by dissolving out with a solvent. Pulverized fuel ash, sand, gravel, artificial aggregate, pigments, aeration additives, plasticizers or hardeners can be included in the compositions.
