Abstract

635,401. Feeding webs. MASON & SONS, Ltd., E. N., and WOODHAM, E. April 5, 1948, No. 9475. [Class 100 (i)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXX] Mechanism for preventing bands such as endless belts, paper webs or the like from " wandering " on their supporting rollers comprises two blocks, mounted in brackets, in which the opposite ends of a roller are mounted, and between each block and the adjacent end of the roller is freely mounted a narrow roller, each narrow roller being connected to one end of a chain, belt or cable of which the other end is secured to a fixed point, a coiled spring adjacent each end of the main roller secured at one end to its adjacent bracket and having its other end secured to a fixed point, serving to apply a restoring force in the opposite direction to the chains or the like, the brackets being mounted on a bar located underneath the roller or the like and pivotally mounted about an axis at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the roller or the like. The Figures show the application to an endless belt or paper web 11 which passes around a roller 1 supported by spindles 14 mounted in blocks 9 which are adjustably mounted in brackets 15 by screws 10. The brackets are mounted on a bar 13 pivotally mounted at 7 about a vertical axis. On each spindle 14 is loosely mounted a roller 2 to which is secured a pinion 3 gearing with a spur wheel 4 rotatably supported on the bracket 15. When the belt wanders to one side of the roller 1, it rotates one of the rollers 2 and through the gearing 3, 4 rotates a pulley or chain wheel 5 secured to the wheel 4 so as to apply tension to a chain 6 secured at one end to the wheel 5 and at the other end to a fixed point 16 so as to rotate the whole mechanism about the pivot 7. The belt is thus caused to travel back towards the middle of the length of the roller 1 whereby the tension on the chain 6 is relaxed and the mechanism returned to its normal position by a spring 8. The gearing 3, 4 and chain wheel 5 may be replaced by a rack and pinion or other equivalent mechanism.
