Abstract

Cakes of high denier viscose rayon yarn relatively free from carbon disulphide are produced by collecting the yarn in a rapidly rotating box and continuing the rotation of the box after the completion of the cake, the box having in addition to the holes for draining excess liquid a number of additional holes to allow the carbon disulphide to escape as a result of the rotation of the box during the building up of the cakes and during the further period of rotation. In an example, a spinning box having an internal diameter of seven inches is provided with a number of additional holes having a total cross-sectional area of 0.196 square inch in the production of viscose rayon yarn of 1180 denier, 500 filaments at a speed of 70 metres per minute. The box is rotated for 80 minutes to form the cake and is then immediately rotated for 60 minutes more whilst still in the spinning position within the machine. The box may be provided with 120 holes each having a diameter of 3/32 inch arranged in five equidistant rows in the wall of the box and the 24 holes in each row may be equally spaced and staggered in relation to the holes of the neighbouring row. Two spinning positions and boxes may be provided for each spinning nozzle so that when one cake has been built up in the first spinning box the end of the yarn may be led to the second spinning box and a second cake built up in that box whilst the first cake is subjected to a further period of rotation in the first box.
