Abstract

<PICT:0640386/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0640386/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0640386/IV (a)/3> <PICT:0640386/IV (a)/4> <PICT:0640386/IV (a)/5> <PICT:0640386/IV (a)/6> A solid untwisted artificial monofilament of substantially homogeneous organic plastic material is provided with an open groove or a plurality of parallel grooves in its outer surface, extending at an angle to the axis of the filament so as to impart flexibility and give the appearance of spun or twisted textile filaments, cords or ropes. The groove may be in the form of a continuous or broken helix. As shown in Fig. 1, a filament 1, formed by extrusion of organic plastic material through an orifice, is provided with grooves 2, 3, set at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the filament, and extending round the filament in helical fashion. If desired, the grooves may be at right angles to the axis. As shown, there are two series of grooves formed on opposite sides of the filament. They may be formed by passing the filament between a pair of shaping rollers while it is in a soft state, e.g. immediately after its extrusion. The filament may be formed by extruding a hot cellulose ester composition and solidfying by cooling, or it may be formed by extruding viscose into an acid coagulating bath. Fig. 7 shows a filament with helical grooves formed similarly to those of Fig. 1 except that the grooves are narrower and not so deep. In Fig. 3, the helical grooves 6 extend continuously round the filament. They may be formed by providing in conjunction with the extrusion orifice a shaping orifice which is rotated continuously during the extrusion at constant speed. As shown in Fig. 5, the filament is provided with two sets of grooves, one set passing in unbroken helix fashion round the filament, and the other set extending longitudinally or at a different angle from the first set. The grooves 8 may be formed by a rotating die, and the grooves 9 may be formed by a die which is stationary or which rotates in the opposite direction or at a different speed from that of the other die. The filament of Figs. 9 and 10 has two deep helical grooves 15, 16, which extend from end to end.
