Abstract
634,514. Treating gems; work-holders. SPIRA, J. May 10, 1947, No. 12707. Convention date, May 11, 1946. [Class 60] A machine for a diamond-polisher's bench 10 comprises spaced upright guides 65, 75 for guiding a dop-holding tong 13 substantially radially of the lap 12 as the diamond D is slid thereon, an arm 80 pivoted to one of the guides 75 and having a tong-engaging part 82, and a member 86 for applying variable resilient pressure to the part 82 by way of the arm 80 to augment the gravitational descent of the dop 34. The tong 13 is resiliently supported by rollers 59 and its descent is limited by a lever 93 which, at its opposite end, engages a depthgauge 104. The depth-gauge also indicates, by the degree of oscillation of the needle, whether the grain is orientated for cutting to proceed satisfactorily. The diamond D is held by its unfinished bezel portion between jaws 35 clamped by bevel-closed jaws 42 actuated by a screwed member 44. An adjustable rod 37 supports the near face of the diamond. The dop is retained by spring-pressed balls 31 in a carrier adjustable around arcuate guideways 24. Specifications 564,632, 565,419 and 566,078 are referred to.
