Abstract
634,090. Projectiles. MARTIN, W. A. O., HULSE, F. W., and BLACKMAN, W. July 15, 1946, No. 21126. [Class 9 (i)] A projectile having a plurality of stabilizing fins retracted within the diameter of the adjacent projectile casing before firing is provided with means operated by a piston actuated by the propellant gases to force the fins into the extended position, means being provided to hold the fins so extended. A rocket projectile has a rocket motor casing 1 having an end-plate 2 and venturi 3. Centrally mounted in the end-plate 2 is a spigot 4 provided with slotted lugs 5 carrying pins 6 on which are pivotally-mounted segments 7 having teeth 8 meshing with a rack 11 on a piston-rod mounted in the bore 12 of the spigot 4. The end of the bore 12 adjacent the combustion chamber of the rocket motor is closed by a choke plug 13. Riveted to the segments 7 are the tail-fins 10 which in the retracted position extend behind the rocket, the fin assembly then having an overall width within the diameter of the adjacent rocket casing 1. - Upon firing, the propellent gases operating through the choke plug 13 force the rack 11 rearwards, thus rotating the segments 7 through 90 degrees when the fins 10 abut against shoulders 17 in slots 18 in a ring-member 19 mounted on the end-plate 2. Springs 14 then engage in recesses 16 in the segments 7 to hold the fins in the extended position.
