Abstract
A cartridge-actuated device, such as a firearm, comprises a compressed-air pump 17, 18, for increasing the pressure in a loading chamber 3a, Fig. 3 (not shown), in order to ignite the cartridge, the pump having a piston 12 which can be moved to a cocked position against the action of a spring 11 by means of a lever 5 and released by a trigger mechanism. The piston, which is formed with a skirt 14 having a slot 15, is slidable in a cylinder 8 adapted to be moved by a handle in order to permit a cartridge to be inserted into the chamber 3a. The cylinder is provided with a head 9 having a chamber 9b in which a valve 31 is located and normally urged away from its seat 37 by a spring the chamber 9b communicates with a compression chamber 30 by means of passages 28, 29 and grooves 36. In operation, in order to fire the device, the piston is moved rearwardly by means of a lever 5 which is connected to a link 6 having a lug 16 adapted to engage with the end of the slot 15 the piston is retained in this cocked position by the trigger mechanism. The cylinder 8 is moved rearwardly so that a cartridge can be inserted and is then locked in the position shown. Upon release of the trigger mechanism the piston compressses the air in the chamber 30 so that increased air pressure acts on the cartridge via the passages 28, 29 and grooves 36 thereby igniting it. The expansion of the explosive gases causes the valve 31 to shut and drive out the projectile. The cartridge unit for the device comprises a projectile part 41 which is to be fired and a cartridge case 42 fixed thereto which contains the propallent charge 43, 44, the part 41, prior to the propulsion thereof, forming a valving means for sealing off the rear end of the barrel of the device. The explosive charge 44 may be stabilized and treated gun-cotton capable of igniting under the action of a Diesel effect thereby firing the main explosive charge 43 alternatively, the two charges may be mixed to form a charge capable of igniting spontaneously. The portion 42 of the cartridge unit may have a gas escape hole and be formed on its inner end with an annular rib 47 for guiding purposes.
