634,061. Refuse bins. NEALE, W. March 24, 1948, No. 8605. [Class 26] In a refuse bin having a body 10 which has a removable container 13, a lid 11 hinged to the body and a pedal lever 15 having a tread 18 pivoted on an axis 16 connected by a link 20 pivotally connected to a bracket 23 on the lid whereby the lid can be opened by depressing the tread 18, the pedal lever link and bracket are so disposed that a first operation of the pedal lever 15 opens the lic 11, the lid remaining open until a seconc operation of the pedal lever is made, this second operation causing the lid 11 to close. The lid is supported in an open position by the projecting portion 24 which engages the outside of the body 10 of the bin in which the container 13 rests on a bracket 14. The second depression of the tread 18 is sufficient to rock the pivotal connection between the end 22 of the link 20 and the bracket 23 over the dead-centre position whereupon the lid 11 will close by gravity. In the construction of Fig. 5 the link 20 passes through an opening 26 in a plate 25 supporting the container 13 and comprises two sections 27, 28 secured together to provide a stepped portion 30, said portion 30 passing through the opening in said plate when the link is moved upwardly to open the lid but engaging said plate on downward movement of said link to prevent the lid closing. The link 20 is connected to the pedal lever 15 by a coupling member 29 pivotally attached to the lower end of the link 20 and sliding in a slot 33 in the pedal lever. In a further modification a cam plate is pivoted about a horizontal axis within the bin, said plate having pivotally attached thereto on its upper side one end of a link the other end of which is connected to the lid. The lower side of said plate is provided with a slot to define' two diverging surfaces. Another link has its lower end connected to the pedal lever, and its upper end adapted to engage the diverging surfaces on said plate, so that successive operations of the foot pedal cause the plate to be rocked in opposite directions thus opening or closing the lid.
