Abstract

633,862. Spray-producers. NU-SWIFT, Ltd., and HENSHAW, T. A. March 11, 1947, No. 6835. [Class 69 (iii)] A nozzle has a flexible diaphragm between its liquid feed conduit and a circumferentiallyadjustable discharge controlling member, the diaphragm having a series of openings into, or away from, complete or partial coincidence with which a series of passages through the controlling member can be brought. A nipple a, Fig. 1, screwed to the end of a liquid delivery pipe has a flexible diaphragm c, having a central opening c<SP>1</SP> and openings c<SP>2</SP>-c<SP>5</SP>, secured between the nipple and a member b. A rotatable drum d, having a central passage d<SP>1</SP> and circumferentially spaced passages d<SP>2</SP>-d<SP>7</SP>, is held against the nipple by a flange b<SP>2</SP>, acting through a bearing e on a collar f screwed to the drum. Passages d<SP>2</SP>, d3 are turned inwardly at their outer ends, and when aligned with the openings c<SP>2</SP>, c<SP>3</SP> in the diaphragm c streams of water strike the central jet forming a spray. When passages d<SP>4</SP>-d<SP>7</SP> are aligned with openings c<SP>2</SP>-c<SP>5</SP> a fine mist is produced by converging orifices g<SP>1</SP> and g<SP>2</SP> in the nipples g, Fig. 2. Alternatively, passages d<SP>2</SP>-d<SP>7</SP> may be blocked, providing a solid central jet alone. In a further embodiment the central openings in the diaphragm. and drum are offset from the centre, and the remaining openings arranged as in Fig. 4. The drum can thereby act as a shut-off valve, and by appropriate rotation any combination of mist, spray or solid jet can be delivered.
