[Class 108 (iii)] Also in Group XXXVIII] A cantilever spring which can be readily inserted into its mounting in which it is locked when stressed into its operative position has a projection 3 at the fixed end of the spring 1, directed away from the convex side and a second projection 2 in the opposite direction. This end of the spring is inserted through the hole in the mounting 4 and when the free end of the spring is stressed into position on the abutment 6 the pressure holds projection 3 upwards against the right-hand face of the mounting 4 and the projection 2 downwards against the left-hand face. Longitudinal movement is thus impossible. In modifications the projections are formed by bending the spring and the spring may be doubled back on itself to provide a graduated increase in resistance. In further modifications a screw replaces one abutment and may be used to vary the spring tension either by its end pressing on the spring or by having a head shaped to act as a cam. The locating projections may alternatively be at the free end of the spring to engage around the abutment.
