Abstract
614,746. Barometers; indicating-apparatus. SCAMMELL, E. W. July 24, 1946, No. 21986. [Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv)] A barometer comprises an exhausted and sealed metallic bellows held extended against atmospheric pressure by an axially - aligned coil spring connected to the. bellows by a rigid member coupled to an indicator, the bellows and the spring being of low spring rating so that the combination is very sensitive. The rod h connecting the bellows d and coil spring k is stepped laterally in the neighbourhood of a spindle l carrying a pointer p which is rotated by a cord or chain q secured to the rod h and passing round the spindle. A second cord or chain r, or a continuation of the first, is wound round the spindle in opposition to the first and is connected to the rod h through a light tension springs., In order to obtain greater magnification, pulleys may be incorporated in the connection between the spindle and rod. Expansion of the bellows and spring due to temperature act in opposite directions, thereby substantially compensating the barometer for temperature effects.
