Abstract

Pressure and vacuum gauges. - To obviate the effect of vibration or of fluctuating pressure on the reading and on the wear of pressure gauges, part or the whole of the moving part of the gauge is surrounded with a liquid such as glycerine. A Bourdon gauge sn modified consists of the case a, tube b, spindle c, pointer d, and dial e. The glass f is fixed in place by rubber packing-rings g, h. Liquid is put in the case through a hole closed by the plug j. The gauge is preferably provided with means by which the liquid can expand without materially altering the pressure on it. For this purpose, the flexible diaphragm l is fixed over an opening in the back of the case by the ring k, which is screwed into bosses m in the back of the case. The steadying effect may be increased by widening the moving parts across the direction in which they would tend to move under the influence of shocks, or by forming them with vanes. A similar modification of a gauge of the Schaffer type is also described.
