Abstract
Stable solutions of polythionic acid compounds are produced by the addition thereto of substances consisting of salts of such polyvalent heavy metals as are capable of forming in the said solution compounds of the said metals in the oxidized and reduced states. Preferably the pH should be adjusted to below 3. Cupric and ferric salts are specified stabilizers, which may be used alone or in conjunction with one or more of the nitrogen-containing compounds of Specification 632,929, or the wetting agents of Specification 632,928. Alcoholic or other organic solutions of polythionates may be prepared by adding sufficient of a metallic hydroxide or carbonate, e.g. cupric or ferric hydroxide or of an organic base, e.g. triethanolamine, to the solution of polythionic acid to produce the required degree of neutralization. The examples relate to the stabilization of aqueous solutions of pentathionic acid, sodium pentathionate, potassium pentathionate, potassium tetrathionate and alkali metal tetrathionates in general.ALSO:Stable solutions of polythionic acid compounds for use in cosmetics and external medicines are produced by the addition thereto of substances consisting of salts of such polyvalent heavy metals as are capable of forming in the said solution compounds of said metals in the oxidised and reduced states. Preferably the pH should be adjusted to below 3. Cupric and ferric salts are specified stabilizers, which may be used alone or in conjunction with one or more of the nitrogen containing compounds of Specification 632,929 or the wetting agents of Specification 632,928. Alcoholic or other organic solutions of polythionates may be prepared by neutralizing such a solution of polythionic acid with the metal oxide or carbonate, e.g., cupric or ferric or with an organic base, e.g., triethanolamine. The examples relate to the stabilization of aqueous solutions of pentathionic acid, sodium pentathionate, potassium pentathionate, potassium tetrathionate and alkali metal tetrathionates in general.
