632,654. Washing gases. RATHGEB, H. Aug. 27, 1946, No. 25652. Convention date, Aug. 27, 1945. [Class 55 (ii)] Apparatus for washing gases contaminated by liquid and solid particles comprises a rotary atomiser, means for mixing a washing liquid with the gas and for feeding the mixture to said atomiser, a filter so positioned in relation to said atomiser that the atomised gas-liquid mixture is thrown against said filter, solid particles being continuously washed from the filter, and means for recirculating the separated liquid to the atomiser. In the form shown, a gas inlet pipe 2 extends into container 1 to just above the surface 4 of the washing liquid therein. Contaminated gas passes through pipe 2 and entrains washing liquid conveyed from the container by pipe 3. The gas-liquid mixture enters a bladed wheel atomiser 5, suspended above the end of pipe 2, the atomiser being rotated by the gas flow or by an electrical drive. The atomised mixture is thrown horizontally by the atomiser into an annular filter 8 of, for example, horse hair or steel or copper wool, the solid and liquid particles being separated from the gas. The liquid continuously scavenges the filter and drops into the container to be recirculated. The gas passes to the outlet, through a secondary filter 11, if further cleaning is desired.
