Abstract

A shaped mass of aqueous dispersion of natural or synthetic rubber (which may be contained in a mould or disposed on a dipping former) is placed in a chamber, and the air or part of the air in the chamber is displaced by steam at atmospheric pressure. If the dispersion vulcanizes at a temperature below 100 DEG C., only part of the air in the chamber is displaced, there being formed a mixture of steam and air having a dewpoint at the said temperature. If the dispersion vulcanizes at 100 DEG C., all the air is displaced. In either case the supply of steam is adjusted to maintain the dispersion at the vulcanizing temperature. The dispersion may be a frothed dispersion of the kind described in Specifications 332,525 and 332,526, [both in Class 70], which may gel at 50 - 80 DEG C. and vulcanize at 100 DEG C., in which case the dispersion is first gelled, by displacing only part of the air to produce a partial pressure of steam, and then vulcanized by displacing all the air by steam; or the frothed dispersion may gel in the cold, in which case the first step is omitted. The apparatus described in Specification 632,088 may be used, this apparatus comprising a base and a movable cover member which together form a chamber. Specification 487,350 also is referred to.
