Abstract

A stable liquid composition is recovered from an ungelled polychloroprene latex foam containing zinc oxide and alkali silicofluoride by a process which comprises dispersing said foam in an aqueous medium containing a buffering agent capable of removing zinc ions and, as stabiliser a surface-active agent which is non-ionic or which ionises to give an organophilic anion. The recovered liquid composition may be mixed with new polychloroprene latex, zinc oxide, soap, and carbon black and re-used for the manufacture of sponge rubber. The buffering agent which is capable of removing zinc ions may be an alkali carbonate, borate, including tetraborate, phosphate, sulphite, oxalate, ferrocyanide, ferricyanide, or chromate. The non-ionic surface active agent may be a reaction product of polyethylene glycol with an aliphatic alcohol having more than 6 carbon atoms, with an aliphatic acid having more than 8 carbon atoms, or with a phenol. The ionisable agent may be one having the general formula R-SO3M where M represents an alkali metal, hydrogen, or ammonium, and R represents an organic radical containing at least one group having more than 8 carbon atoms. Many such surface agents are specified. The recovered liquid may be creamed by means of ammonium alginate, pectin bodies, Irish moss, or locust seed or carob bean gum.
