[Class 137] A ventilator to be applied to the apex or other part of a roof of a factory building or the like comprises, a duct 11, the side walls 10 of which are inwardly inclined at 13, a cover plate 14, spaced from the side walls and a wind shield 17 arranged laterally of the side walls to form passages 19 so that air is extracted from the duct 11 when wind sweeps across openings 20 or is directed by the roof upwardly through openings 21. In one application, to the apex of the roof, angle-iron purlins 2 are supported by rafters 1 and support roof coverings 3 bearing against iron cleats 4, which support angle pieces 6 against which the vertical portions of flashing pieces 7 are applied. Angle-iron uprights 8 are provided upon the angle pieces 6, the former being arranged at intervals and joined at the top by angle-iron ties 9. Sheets 10 are applied against the uprights 8. The duct 11 may have one or more cross panels 12a intermediate of the end plates 12. The transverse ties 9 support the plate 14 which has flanges 15. The upper edges of the wind shield 17 supported by channel members 18 are in alignment with the cover plate, the lower edges being above the lower edges of the walls 10. When wind is blowing across openings 20 and up the passage 19 on the windward side, past the associated vent 16 reduction of pressure in the duct 11 results and air is extracted therefrom. Similar action takes place to a lesser degree on the leeward side of the ventilator.
