Abstract

631,306. Optical sighting devices. BARR & STROUD, Ltd., and FRENCH, Sir J. W. Dec. 15, 1944, No. 25259. [Class 97 (i)] The sighting device consists of a single optical element as of glass having a plane object end with an index mark or marks on its surface and an eye end comprising a plane portion through which an object is viewed and a convex portion by which said mark or marks is or are focused so that the object is viewed simultaneously with the index mark or marks. As shown, an index mark 8 on the plane object end 14 of the element is in the focus of a convex portion 7 at the eye end of the element and is viewed simultaneously with an object seen through a plane portion 10, which may be parallel to the plane end 14 to avoid chromatic aberration. In another form, the object end and eye end form two sides of a triangular internallyreflecting prism with the plane portion 10 orthogonal to the object end. The element may also be in the form of a pentagonal doublyreflecting prism.
