Abstract

630,833. Lathe details. WARD & CO., Ltd., H. W., and HOOSON, G. C. Dec. 11, 1947, No. 32667. [Class 83 (iii)] Bar-feed mechanism for a lathe comprises a reciprocable holder a actuated by spring means i in the forward direction, a catch m for retaining the holder against the action of the spring i, and reciprocable means q, which is operable in one direction to retract the holder against the spring until retained by the catch and operable in the other direction to release the catch and allow the spring to advance the holder. As applied to a hollow-spindle lathe, the tubular holder a, Fig. 3, has a split collet a<SP>1</SP> for frictionally gripping the stock and is rotatablymounted in a bearing located in an arm c secured to a movable feed-rod d. A bridgemember g, which is attached by the spring i to a casing e, is secured to the rod d and is slidable on a stationary guide-rod f ; a projection k on the member g co-operates with the catch m which is controlled by a spring n. The rod d has slidably mounted thereon a rack-sleeve p co-operating with a pinion s, and a second pinion r, interconnected and coaxial with the pinion s, co-operates with the reciprocating bar-rack q which is actuated by a hand lever associated with the operating mechanism of the lathe chuck. When the hand lever is actuated to close the chuck on the bar, the rack q rotates the pinions r, s, to displace the rod d until it is retained by the catch m, the collet a<SP>1</SP> being drawn along the stock. The bar q, when moved in the opposite direction to open the chuck, releases the catch m and allows the holder a to feed the stock under the influence of the spring i. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the racks and pinions are replaced by drums r, s and tapes u, x. The Provisional Specification describes also the bar q as being attached to the hand lever which has free movement in addition to that required for operating the chuck.
