Abstract

630,790. Lamps forming a line of tight. NEEL, E., and PYE, R. Oct. 30, 1946, No. 32225. [Classes 75(iii) and 75(iv)] A fluorescent lighting system comprises a beam adapted to traverse the space above the area to be illuminated and constitute a housing for the control equipment and a supply wiring conduit for a series of fluorescent tubes supported beneath the beam and arranged end to end along its length, said beam comprising one or more channel members 1, Fig. 1, each with its open side directed downwards and a cover for the open side of said beam comprising a series of trays 3, Fig. 2, detachably fixed to the member or members 1, each tray 3 being provided on its underside with lamp holders 26 for a fluorescent tube 27 and supporting the control equipment on its upper side. The choke unit 5, terminal block 8 and starting switch 9, associated with each fluorescent tube or group of fluorescent tubes, are carried on the tray 3 which is detachably connected to the channel beam 1 by releasable fastening means comprising cross pieces 20 centrally pivoted on pins 21 and adapted to engage the flanged lower edges 2 of the member 1. A reflector 12 is detachably mounted on each tray 3 by means of a pair of spring controlled rotatable T-pieces 13 each provided with washers 15 spaced by a spring 16; and each fluorescent tube 27 is supported at the ends by clips 26 in housings 25. The channel members 1 are provided with apertures at each end whereby they may be joined by connecting pieces 33 by which the fitting may be suspended by pendants in the form either of a chain 51 and ceiling rose 52, or of a rod 46 connected by a hooked bolt 36 to a ceiling bracket 47, or of a composite rod 34, adjustable in length by a turnbuckle 35, and connected by a hooked bolt 36 with a bracket 38 pivotally mounted on dependent webs 40 of a ceiling fitting 41. In an alternative construction the reflector may be supported at each end by a stepped portion of a housing 25 and retained firmly in position by a pair of pivoted springs, arranged one in each housing 25 and adapted to be urged against the adjacent end edge of the reflector.
