Abstract
630,746. Variable area wings. MAKHONINE, J. July 7, 1947, No. 17935. Convention date, Jan. 17, 1946. [Class 4] In a variable-area wing or tail plane an apertured rib 20 is provided in the longitudinal plane of symmetry, the telescopic end sections 6, 7 being provided with offset spars 12, 13, 14, 15 which pass through the rib apertures and are so disposed that in the retracted condition the free ends of the spars associated with each end section next within the other section. As shown, the wing centre section 1 carries the telescopic end portions 6, 7 which are provided with ailerons or flaps 9, 10 telescoping into similar surfaces 2, 3 mounted on the centre section. The end sections are extended and retracted by the spars 12, 13, 14, 15, adjacent pairs of which engage guide rollers 31 in the central rib 20, and are provided with racks engaging pinions 33 operated by chain and sprocket gearing from the pilot's control station. The spaces between the spars may be used as fuel tanks, or for other storage purposes. Dihedral angle may be provided by making the surfaces of arcuate formation in the transverse plane, Fig. 3 (not shown).
