[Class 98 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A slidable rod 1 carrying a fluorescent screen in an X-ray apparatus is associated with a locking member which either allows free sliding of the rod, or allows movement in one direction only, or locks the rod against all axial movement. The locking member comprises a ring 2 surrounding the rod with a small amount of clearance, pivoted at 4 to a supporting carriage 6 and spring- pressed at 11 into engagement with the edge 10 of a groove 8 in a rod 9. As shown, the rod 1 can slide freely, but on moving rod 9 slightly to the left the ring 2 will be spring held in engagement with rod 1 to allow it to slide to the right, but increasing the locking pressure on movement to the left. Further movement of rod 9 will bring edge 14 of groove 8 into contact with ring 2, and press it into engagement with rod 1, which is then locked against all axial movement. Rod 9 may be moved by a rotating cam, or may be replaced by a cam acting directly on ring 2.
