Abstract

628,880. Calendering paper &c. NEW YORK & PENNSYLVANIA CO., Inc. Oct. 29, 1946, No. 32049. Convention date, Nov. 3, 1945. [Class 96] To avoid difficulties due to distortion of soft-surfaced rolls of a super-calender stack and consequent uneven stretching, a web W of paper &c., e.g. from the drier section of a paper-making machine is super-calendered by passing through a succession of calender presses such as that illustrated, in series. The rolls 18 are of metal, e.g. chilled iron, and are driven individually to accommodate stretching of the web. The rolls 44 have compressed fibre or paper coverings, a pair of rolls 44 being mounted diammetrically of each pressure roll 29 and driven thereby at the speed of travel of the web W. They are so mounted that the upper and lower rolls 44 of each pair can be interchanged by starting an electric motor which turns chain gearing and a ring gear 46, thus enabling the lower roll 44, if damaged, to be swung round, substituted by the upper roll 44, and taken out, with the machine running, split bearing clamps 31 facilitating replacement of the rolls 44. The bearings of the pressure roll 29 are on arms 26 pivoted to a carriage 22 adjusted vertically at 24 &c., the ends of the arms being connected by lostmotion links 63 and springs 62 with arms 59 raised and lowered by motor and worm gear above a screw-rod 60 to raise and to control the spring pressure on the rolls 29. Doctors 57 and 21 are fitted, and the web may be moistened by jets of water or steam before passing into the nips of the super-calender. A guide roll 65 may be cooled or steam-heated.
