Abstract
Ferrous metal articles are tempered in a bath of fused caustic soda above 400 DEG C., preferably 630-700 DEG C. and then cleaned in another bath at a temperature below 400 DEG C. consisting of fused caustic soda and up to 20 per cent by weight of one or more of the compounds sodium hydride, sodamide and sodium cyanide. The cleaning bath may contain 1-20 per cent., preferably 2-5 per cent, by weight of sodium hydride and the cleaning operation follows the tempering operation. According to the Provisional Specification the minimum tempering temperature is 500 DEG C. Specifications 159,793, [Class 72], 557,530, 565,567, 575,103, 586,250, [Group XXXVI], and 598,735 are referred to.
