Abstract
Caffeine is extracted from its solution in an organic solvent (obtained by extraction of coffee or its aqueous extracts) by treatment with water and subsequent recovery from the latter; the aqueous mother-liquor may then be treated with an organic solvent to extract the remaining caffeine, this extract being either worked up separately or returned to the original solution (if the same solvent has been used). The aqueous extract is preferably treated with activated carbon before crystallization of the caffeine. Suitable apparatus is shown.
