Abstract

628,155. Protective arrangements. E.M.P. ELECTRIC, Ltd., and HUMPHREYS, I. E. March 13, 1947, No. 7071. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] To prevent destruction of the valve resistor 1 in a lightning arrester due to overheating resulting from excessive or persistent currents, a low melting point metal 10 is inserted between the earth terminal 21 and resistor 1, and a spring 15 acts to eject the terminal when the metal melts so as to rapidly open the earth circuit and give visual indication of disconnection. To permit removal of the metal for inspection the metal may form a hood secured to the end of a pin 9 extending from the earth terminal and threaded externally to engage in a complementary thread in the contact plate 3; or the metal may form a section in the length of the pin. Alternatively, the metal may be secured to the plate 3 and threaded to receive the pin (see also Group XXXVII).
