Abstract
939,125. Surge diverters. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS-G.m.b.H. July 26, 1962, No. 28784/62. Class 38 (4). A surge diverter comprises an arc gap device and a voltage dependent resistor mounted in series upon an insulating pin and held thereon against a pressure tending to remove them from the pin by a fusible link located at the free end of the pin. As shown, an are gap device 1 and a resistor 2 are mounted upon an insulating pin 6 which is attached to a terminal bolt 4 extending from an insulating housing 3. A flanged metal member 8 which serves as the other terminal of the diverter and which is soldered at 8<SP>1</SP> to a sleeve 7 fixed to the pin 6, holds the gap device 1 and the resistor 2 in position upon the pin 6 against the pressure of a spring 10 which also bears against the head of the terminal bolt 4. In operation, overloading of the surge diverter causes the resistor 2 to heat up; when a permissible temperature is exceeded, melting takes place at the soldered joint 8<SP>1</SP> and the members 8, 2, and 1 are stripped off the pin 6 by the pressure of the spring 10 whereby a disconnection is effected. The housing 3 may be at least partly transparent so that the stripped parts provide a visual indication of the state of the diverter. A sprayed or vapour-deposited metal layer may replace the sleeve 7. The fusible link may be provided directly between the resistor 2 and the pin 6, in which case the member 8 is not required.
