Abstract
Amino-polymethylene-carboxylic-acid-amides are polymerized by heating in a plurality of stages, the first stage to produce a pre-condensate being effected in presence of at least an equal weight of water. Viscosity stabilizers which act initially as catalysts, e.g. aliphatic mono- or di-carboxylic acids, or aliphatic diamines may be present. In the examples: (1) o -amino-caproic-acid-amide, water and a little acetic acid are heated in an autocalve with isolation of ammonia. Water is then distilled off and the residue further heated; (2) epsilon-amino-caproic-acid-amide and water were heated in an autocalve with a high-pressure reflux-cooler till all the ammonia has escaped. Water is then distilled off and the residue heated, finally in vacuo. The products may be spun into strong threads. Specifications 506,125 and 535,141 are referred to.
