Abstract

Caprolactam is polymerized (in the absence of water) by using g -butyrolactone as reaction initiator. In examples: (1) 1.06 grams butyrolactone are added to 100 grams caprolactam (both water-free), and the mixture heated at 240-250 DEG C. for 28 hours in a hydrogen atmosphere; (2) 3.05 grams butyrolactone are added to 100 grams caprolactam and the mixture heated for 12 hours in a hydrogen atmosphere; 10 grams of the resulting precondensate are mixed with 90 grams caprolactam and heated at 240-250 DEG C. for 12 hours and then at 230-235 DEG C. for 20 hours in a hydrogen atmosphere to give a polymer having an intrinsic viscosity of 1.02.
