Abstract
627,260. Ball and roller bearings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., MORTON, C. J., and WOODFIELD, T. H. Sept. 26 1946, No. 28798. [Class 12 (i)] In a ball or taper-roller bearing, a wire loading spring acting axially on one of the races to take up play in the balls or rollers is of a form having loops or folds disposed within a geometrical annulus when viewed axially, alternate loops lying in two different planes so that alternate loops act on the race (outer race 8) and on the end wall of the housing recess 7, Fig. 8 (Prov.). The spring may be coiled, Fig. 1, (Prov.), with small inner loops 2 joined by outer loops 3, 4, the loops 3 being set axially to one side and the loops 4 to the other side. Or the spring may be of zig-zag form, Fig. 3 (Prov.), with outer projections 9 and inner radial loops 10. The spring, first bent into one plane, is deformed so that some or all of the loops or projections lie outside the original plane on one or both sides. A gap 1 is provided in the spring to allow for adjustment. The outer projections may bear on the housing while the inner loops bear on the outer race of the bearing through the intermediary of a washer 11, Fig. 3 (Comp.), which also shows the bearing assembled within the housing recess by a resilient cap member 12.
