Abstract
626,734. Folding edges. HUY, F. P. d'. Jan. 9, 1947, No. 786. Convention date, Aug. 5, 1944. [Class 42 (i)] [Also in Group XV] A machine for folding the edges of cardboard sheets comprises conveyer belts for supporting and feeding the blanks longitudinally through the machine, two spaced-apart parallel supports extending longitudinally of the machine for carrying complementary devices to fold and paste the edges, and means whereby one of the supports can be transversely adjusted in the machine to accommodate different size blanks. The machine comprises a number of pairs of rollers or cylinders journalled in double bearings 3, 4, mounted at each side of the machine on longitudinal beams 2 to perform the various processes. The lower rollers are driven by chains 8, the upper rollers being vertically adjustable to accommodate varying thicknesses of sheets and driven from the lower rollers. The sheets are guided and moved through the machine by the two supports 9, 10 comprising lower halves 9a, 10a, transversely adjustable on rods 62 fixed to the beams 2, and upper parts 9b and 10b, mounted archedly over the lower halves through a vertical sliding adjustment to form a space on each support 9, 10 for two conveyer belts 21 passing through that space and around pulleys 15, 16 and 17, 18 mounted in alignment with the ends of the supports 9, 10 on spindles 5, 19 and 6, 20, tension on the belts being maintained by the jockey pulleys 22. The sheets are fed into the machine at 24, Fig. 2, and a feeler 26 adjustably positioned on a longitudinal rail fastened to holder 9b arranges, by means of a relay device, to rotate the cylinders 28, 30 a limited amount, and so cut off the front corners of the sheet. This is followed by combined crease-indentation and edge-cutting cylinders 32, and then a second sensing-device 57 on the rail causes cylinders 28, 30 to again rotate a limited amount to cut off the tail corners of the sheet. The sheets are next glued by devices 35, 36, dried by drying devices 37, folded on two edges at 38, and then passed to pressing-cylinders 40, 42 and out of the machine at 25. Before the sheets are again fed through the machine to treat the other two edges, the support 10 is transversely adjusted to accommodate the new width by means of two screwed rods 48 and hand wheels 50 coupled together. The rollers &c. acting on the left-hand edge of the sheets are transversely moved with the support 10 by tongues thereon engaging with circumferential grooves in the rollers, transmission to the rollers being maintained by transverse keyways on the driving shafts.
