Abstract

Cellulose derivatives and nylon are coloured by applying a dyestuff of the formula <FORM:0626704/IV (c)/1> where n is 1 or 2, D is ethylene, propylene, or trimethylene, R is hydrogen, methyl, or ethyl, Q is o- or p-phenylene which may be substituted, and R1 is an alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, or hydroxyalkyl group of four or less carbon atoms. Q may be substituted by halogen, acetamino, methyl, hydroxyl, alkoxy, or trifluoromethyl. The dyes are made by condensing an amine of the formula NH2.Q.OD.(OD)n.OR with an anthraquinone having an alkylamino, alkoxyalkylamino, or hydroxyalkylamino group of four or less carbon atoms in 1-position, and the same or another group of the same class, or a halogen atom, or a hydroxy group, in 4-position, by usual methods, using, e.g., an ammonium salt of a fatty acid and a copper salt in the case of the halogen body. The products dye, e.g. cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, acetatepropionate, acetate-butyrate, and methyl cellulose, and colour cellulose ester and ether lacquers. Examples describe the reaction of p-{b -[b -(b -hydroxyethoxy)-ethoxy]-ethoxy}-aniline with (1) 1-methylamino- or 1-ethylamino-4-brom-anthraquinone; (2) the product of reacting one molquinizarin with two mols. of b -methoxyethylamine in butanol, in presence or not of boric acid; (3) 1-ethylamino-4-hydroxyanthraquinone in pyridine in presence of boric acid. Lists of other substances which may be prepared according to the examples are given. The preparation of 1-alkylamino, 1-alkoxyalkylamino, and 1-hydroxyalkylamino-anthraquinones by reaction of a 1-halogen-anthrquinone with the appropriate amine, and the halogenation of the products, are described.
