Abstract

The invention comprises dyestuffs of the formula: <FORM:0856553/IV (c)/1> wherein Y is hydrogen or a hydroxyl group and at least one X is a phenoxy or alkoxy group which may be substituted and the other X, if not also such a group, is hydrogen. The dyestuffs are made by reacting a compound of the formula: <FORM:0856553/IV (c)/2> wherein Y is hydrogen or a hydroxyl group and at least one Z is halogen and the other Z is halogen or hydrogen with an aliphatic alcohol or a phenol in the presence of an acid-binding agent, or by treating a compound of the formula: <FORM:0856553/IV (c)/3> wherein Y is as above and one V is hydroxyl and the other is hydroxyl or hydrogen with an alkylating agent under conditions such that only the b -hydroxyl group or groups are alkylated. The dyestuffs dye or print shaped materials especially fibres of polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose esters or ethers, superpolyamides or superpolyurethanes in orange to red shades, or may be used as pigments. Examples are given.
