Abstract

626,335. Automatic circuit-breakers; snapaction switches. ROTAX, Ltd., and BOURNE, W. G. Oct. 30, 1946, No. 32281. [Class 38(v)] One contact of a thermally-actuated switch is carried by a snap-action lever mechanism operable by either of two pushbuttons and the other contact is carried by a thermally-deformable member, which can also effect separation of the contacts. The mechanism comprises a spring blade 3 with fixed and adjustable abutments 4, 5, respectively, and a contact-lever 9, pivoted at 8 and carrying a contact 10. A button 17, when depressed against a spring 18, bears on a cross-piece 19 of a lever 20, pivoted at 21, which pushes the spring 3 over-centre, the contact 10 being moved by a spring 11 acting on the lever 9 to engage a contact 25 on a bimetal strip 24. The contacts may be opened by depressing a button 16, thereby causing a spring arm 15 to bear on an extension of the spring 3 to throw it over-centre again, the contact 10 being returned by contact of lever 3 with an abutment 9<SP>1</SP> on the lever 9. Alternatively deformation of the strip 24 on overload causes the projection 13 on lever 9 to push the spring 3 into its upper position. The strip 24 may be heated by the current through it or by a series heater 27. The breaker may be short-circuited by a slight additional movement of the button 17 which causes a side arm of lever 20 to push a contact 30 into engagement with a fixed contact 31.
