Abstract

626,097. Pre-stressed concrete structures. STRUCTURAL & MECHANICAL DEVELOPMENT ENGINEERS, Ltd., GOLDBERG, A., and BAK, J. March 13, 1947, No. 7025. [Class 20(iv)] Pre-cast concrete structures are assembled by joining together column units and limbed units to which beam and/or truss or girder elements may be secured, by non-bonded cables threaded through tubes or cored holes and tensioning the cables to form a pre-stressed assembly. As shown in Fig. 2 two column units 1 and a limbed unit 8 are joined together by the cable 2 extending through the tube 3 and tensioned and secured in the cups 4 by known means. At the cupped end each column unit is rebated at each corner to expose the threaded ends 6 of the reinforcement 6a and the assembly shown in Fig. 2 can be coupled to a similar assembly by means of sleeves 7 and thus any desired structure can be built up, the lower ends of the columns being fixed in known manner in foundation blocks. As shown in Fig. 4 each limbed unit has four limbs and the outer end of each limb is rebated at 10 to seat the rebated ends 12 of a beam 9, connection being made by screwed couplings 18, Fig. 2. In a modification the limbed unit may take the form of a box-like casting, e.g. of a light metal alloy provided with integrally cast limbs; the box being filled with concrete and trusses or the like secured to the limbs by riveting or welding.
