Abstract

625,726. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Dec. 3, 1945, No. 32553. [Class 103 (i)] A disc brake comprises inner and outer annular discs capable of axial but non-rotational displacement relative to the wheel to be braked, the discs having co-planar braking surfaces engageable by one or more friction elements and being spaced apart radially to provide an annular space for the circulation of cooling air. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, in which the brake is housed in a recess 8a in an aircraft wheel 8, an outer annulus 10 and an inner annulus 11, of truncated triangular section, are formed with projections 10a and 11a which engage slotted brackets 9 secured to the outer and inner walls of the recess. The brackets allow a small axiaL displacement of the annuli when the brake is applied. A spider 14, having three equidistantly spaced arms 14a, is bolted to a plate 12 secured to the undercarriage leg 13, and each arm carries a pin 15 projecting through the space 16 between the annuli. Brake pads 19b, made in two parts to facilitate assembly, are interposed between the inner faces of the arms 14a and the outer faces of the annuli, and similar pads 19a are interposed between the inner faces of the annuli and the acting faces 18b of cup-shaped sleeves 18 which are slidably mounted on the pins 15 and enclose cup-shaped members 17 formed with recesses for the heads of the pins. The brake is applied by admitting pressure fluid through a passage 15b in each pin to the spaces between the members 17 and sleeves 18, sealing rings 21, 221 being provided to prevent leakage. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the annuli are rectangular in cross-section. In a second form, Fig. 5, the three arms of the spider are formed as blocks 14b which carry sleeves 26 projecting through the spaces between two sets of outer and inner annuli 10, 11 engaged by three sets of brake pads 19a, 19b, 19c. The pads 19a abut end blocks 28 engaged by nuts 27a on pins 27 having heads engaged in conical recesses 18c in sleeves 18 slidably enclosing the blocks 14b, sealing rings 21 being provided between the sleeves and blocks. Pressure fluid is supplied to the spaces between the blocks and sleeves through an annular passage 29 and passages 29a. In further forms, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), one set of brake pads or two sets arranged at diametrically opposite positions are used.
